Reflex Actions

In our biology class, we made an activity about the reflex actions of our body. The activity was in groups, and I worked with Marcos Okecki and Gonzalo Irazusta. This is our work:

2-A reflex, or reflex action, is an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus. This one is not under a conscious control. There are different kind of reflex actions, some are inborn and the rest are learnt. If you have inborn reflex actions is because you have inherit them, and this means that you don’t have to learn it throughout your life. Reflex actions are present in our day to day, although we don’t usually pay attention to them.

3- The structures of a reflex arc are:

  • Receptor.
  • Sensory neuron.
  • Relay neurone (spinal cord).
  • Motor neurone.
  • Effector.

4- Example: when a person accidentally touches a hot object, like a candle, a nerve (a pain sensitive receptor which detects the damaging heat)  actives the nerve impulse, which travels through a sensory nerve to the spinal cord. The response to this impulse is made in the spinal cord, which travels down through a motor nerve to the muscle of the part that is touching the hot object. The muscle receives the response, and his muscle, which would be the receptor, contracts moving away from the heat candle.
